La Boheme is certainly one of the top three performed Operas worldwide, along with Carmen and Aida. It is not my current Puccini Opera; that distinction goes to Manon Lescaut which, as opera critic Irving Kolodin so perfectly phrased it, is “the most of the promise, with the least cost of the fulfillment.” I don’t begrudge Puccini his popularity: his music is often comely, the emotions teach and heartfelt. His librettos seem designed to tug the heartstrings in a plebian grab for popularity, like a television prove tested by a focus group. But that’s OK. So when I observe a production of any of Puccini’s most current operas, I tend to concentrate on sound: the beauty of the instrumental music, the vocal qualities of the singers. I usually ignore the location. A misguided panic of being manipulated by a master? Probably. I’m unusual that diagram!

So when I say I loved this DVD of La Boheme, that I was engrossed by the drama as well as the music, then it must be something special. The Met usually mounts archaic productions. When they stray from that conservative path, the audience tends to catch ornery. This Boheme is a classic production: no “artistic license” shifting the action to the surface of Mars with a cast of farm animals and an orchestra of kazoos! I like a mature Boheme, the contrivance Puccini envisioned it. The emotions are less over-the-top, the drama more organic. The libretto is stutter, even simple. That simplicity is the source of this production’s excellence.

Produced live on 15 March 1977 and the inaugural telecast of the PBS “Live at the Met” series, the DVD transfer effectively reduces many of the artifacts inherent to a 30 year feeble taped program. The image is smooth a cramped fuzzier than we’re now traditional to, but not enough to drive you screaming up the wall. The DTS 5.1 sound is certain and fleshy. As for the singing, both Pavarotti as Rodolfo and Renata Scotto as Mimi are at their absolute peak!

This Boheme features a sublimely sung Rodolfo. All of the things Pavarotti was well-known for are in evidence here: crystalline tone, perfect diction, fluidity of vocal quality. And this younger, svelter Pavarotti actually acts! I was moved by his performance in a allotment he obviously identifies with. As for Scotto, a leading soprano at the Met for two decades, her singing is stunning, with a limpid quality that heightens the emotionalism of her respectable acting. The well-behaved cast includes Maralin Niska as Musetta and Ingvar Wixell as Marcello.

James Levine had advance into his bear as a Conductor around this time. He offers a nearly perfect rendition of this verdant obtain. The Met Orchestra, obviously on the rise as one of the world’s astronomical ensembles, sounds astonishing. Scotto, my favourite soprano, portrays Mimi differently to what we are old-fashioned to seeing and hearing. I became addicted to this film in no time. It’s one of my favorites that I have seen over and over again, and it hasn’t gotten weak yet. The acting and directing is all fabulous. Al Pacino really shines, as always, and Johnny Depp gives an Academy Award performance as the FBI agent. He actually spent time with the staunch Joseph Pistone to secure his character down, as he did when he was working on “Anxiety and Loathing in Las Vegas.” Michael Madsen is also terrific and can once again send chills down our spines fair as he did in “Reservoir Dogs.”

This novel special edition of the DVD is considerable, Powerful better than the new. First off, the sound and relate quality has really improved. Especially the picture; it looks a lot better than the first version that came out. There are also a lot of extras, including features such as director’s commentary, and curious featurette, the novel featurette, deleted scenes, trailers, and more. The featurettes are very moving and makes the DVD that grand more special. A very high quality special edition, if you ask me.

All in all, “Donnie Brasco” is an outstanding relate on all fronts. Filled with drama and suspense, this is a film that will buy you deep into the world of the Mafia. The only ask is how far would you go? And would you risk becoming one of them when it’s all said and done? Ample all the plan!

None of us knows what it’s really like to go undercover. We assume we do but we don’t. Definite, we’ve watched the movies, read the books and all but what it’s doing to your soul, your family life, everything, that it destroys all you have and feel, that is what this movie is about.

This very edifying three-part 1970s-era TV movie is a veritable cornucopia of talent. Based on stories by notorious genre author Richard Matheson and directed by Dan Curtis of Unlit SHADOWS fame, this film boasts Karen Sunless (EASY RIDER; FIVE EASY PIECES; THE Gargantuan GATSBY) in four separate roles, with two teleplays scripted by William F. Nolan (co-author of the famed recent LOGAN’S Hasten) and one–the best of the lot–scripted by Matheson. Also appearing in supporting roles are renowned actors George Gaynes and Gregory Harrison.

Story one, “Julie,” is an intentionally ambiguous witchcraft fable in which Dusky portrays a bookish college professor who isn’t quite what she seems. The epic contains some very subtle rape and S&M innuendo, and there is a fun shrimp twist to the ending. “Millicent and Therese,” the second offering, is the weakest of the lot. Although Murky does a blooming job in the dual role of bickering “sisters,” the audience can peer the ending coming from miles away. The final and strongest of the three stories, “Amelia,” is based on Matheson’s famed short-story “Prey” about a voodoo fetish doll that comes to life and hunts down a woman in her midtown apartment. The ending to this one is very creepy.

All in all, TRILOGY OF Dismay is a fine cramped anxiety flick. Though it is a TV movie á la 1975 and therefore suffers from some of the low-budget production qualities current to such, it certainly offers some fun moments of shadowy humor and a few proper scares. The print worn to acquire the DVD has some noticeable scratches and spots that could’ve been cleaned up digitally, but it’s composed definitely worth the heed of admission.

THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE Unusual 2006 SPECIAL EDITION VERSION. WORTH BUYING. I Appreciate IT. When I first saw this on TV in the 1970′s it disquieted me half to death. Karen Dismal stars in 3 short stories. But as many reviewers here have posted, the most renowned is the final chronicle called Amelia about a woman who buys a doll for a boyfriend which comes to life and chases her around her apartment like a rabid animal. In my thought it is the third narrative that has caused Trilogy of Fear to be remembered after all these years. The third legend is a classic among awe films. In 1999 another company (Anchor Bay) released this on DVD but after they sold out their batch I don’t judge they released anymore. That is why if you get someone selling it on Amazon or elsewhere you can quiz to pay up to $500 for it. I bought one at a Anxiety Movie convention and it turned up being a bootleg and when I took it home it didn’t play. I lost my money. Finally it is out again. This time by a different company and I am impressed with this version. The film has been completely restored and is crystal obvious like you are watching it wait on when it was first released. I was highly impressed with the visual restoration. Exceeded my expecations here. The interviews with Karen Sunless and writer Matheson are stout and informative. Karen looks tall for her age and, in my plan, is one of the most underrated actresses. Unbiased a joy to stare. I haven’t yet watched the entire disc from inaugurate to conclude. Truthfully, I got if for the third anecdote only and if that was all the disc had I collected would of bought it. Not to say the first two stories aren’t unpleasant. They are actually handsome superb. But if you asked a 100 people why they like Trilogy of Alarm…they will likely mention the third legend about the Doll. The plan of a doll that comes to life and tries to extinguish is not unique anymore and has been done repeatedly ever since. Mediate Chucky. But Trilogy of Dread I gain was the first to approach out with it and what makes it work is that the doll is creepy looking. Another reason this was so successful at the time is the novelty of it all. Abet when it first aired in the 1970′s scare stuff, for the most fraction, was less gory. The myth about the doll is only 20 minutes long but what they do in those 20 minutes is astonishing. If you have never seen it before you likely will laugh since the special effects glimpse a microscopic cheesy now. They don’t enjoy up well. In my belief…nothing beats the magic of seeing it wait on then and also seeing it for the first time. Now that I leer it I know what happens throughout the whole myth. But if you haven’t watched it before and you can gape it for the narrative and not try to compare it to special effects of today…you will likely indulge in it. The acting of Karen Dark alone is worth watching. She makes all 3 stories work. She makes them memorable. I would of bought this if it had the third segment only and if it had no bonus material. On a side label…they came out a couple of years ago with a replica of the doll. I was lucky enough to accumulate a runt edition one of only 500 made. The cramped edition had a green outfit on. Not what it wears in the movie. They then sold a massed produced one with a brown outfit. But it seems that everywhere you perceive everyplace is sold out of this doll. I gave this five stars for those buying this that are collectors or who watched it serve in the 1970′s and want to peer it again restored in all its glory. If you are buying it now to ogle for the first time you will likely laugh more than being shy and will be disappointed wondering what all the fuss is about. Recall it with an begin mind and find lost in the narrative and you will not be disappointed.

He also consistently works in eco-friendly messages and talks about having respect for nature, about leaving wild animals alone (especially hazardous ones) and about the need to protect habitat, etc. On the down side, you fetch a nagging feeling that there’s a lot of information that is being left out, and that the mini-lectures Corwin delivers while, say, holding the deadliest viper in Central America, might not be as thorough as it might otherwise be. Corwin is sensitive to how noteworthy each animal is willing to keep up with, and once he drops the animal benefit into the wild, the encounter (and the lecture) is over with. Also, his hands-on arrive seems comely invasive — even though he often is taking share in scientific studies (tagging animals, etc.) and takes immense difficulty to account for that what he is doing has been officially sanctioned, the overall execute may be to befriend audience members to mess about with wild animals themselves, which may have poor consequences.

Few remakes do justice to the unique classic and even fewer improve on it. This one does both. Mara Wilson is unbelievable and gives a once in a lifetime performance. Richard Attenborough is incredible as Santa, at least as excellent as the formidable unique. The scene in the unique featuring Santa visiting with the Dutch war refugee girl is replaced in this remake with Santa visiting with a tiny deaf girl. The scene in the unusual is about as sweet as any scene in any movie ever, and the remake is even sweeter! The deaf girl’s face, when Santa talks to her in effect language, is absolutely worth the tag of this DVD.

The only true weakness for me was the John DeLancie and Jane Leeves share of the movie, as two “imperfect” agents for the “enemy” department store (where all the upper management wears all gloomy) . They reminded me of Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern from “Home Alone” — sort of bumbling unpleasant guys in a terrible cartoon sort of arrangement.
